Is Fast Food the New Tobacco? Should the obesity issue be government regulated or remain personal responsibility?

Image
With the height of consumerism and late-stage capitalism in this day and age, is fast food becoming the new tobacco? And is it possible for the government to make any regulations on obesity? One might think that this is highly impossible and that there is really no way to control what people consume on a daily basis. And the only way for this to work is to make insurance companies control what a person eats or start having restaurants label their food items, which is highly unethical, and no company can force someone to do things that they don't want to do with their body. However, obesity as a whole is not by choice; there are millions of people in the United States and around the world who are genetically predisposed to getting it, taking certain kinds of medications, not having access to high-quality foods if they live in a food desert area, and simply not being able to afford it. If the United States government still has a longing to try to regulate obesit...

Is Pop Culture Good for You?

Image
As we live at the height of pop culture, society has made great shifts in directions that are unmanageable. The industry of all things pop culture has never been a pleasant one. Throughout its inception, there have been many positives and many negatives. There have been many examples across the decades that show us what it was really like in those times. One thing that will make pop culture as big as it is in 2023 is social media. Social media has the power to bring people from all walks of life together to share their favorite interests and ideas in one place. Although social media is a very strong place, there are things that can make it a dangerous place. The reason for this is that so many people can get influenced to do things they would never do, but if their favorite celebrity or influencer is doing it, people are going to find a way to get it. For example, at times, social media as a whole can promote things like weight loss in unhealthy ways, setting unreal...

Literacy History : Alexandra Reyes

Image
Hello, everyone! My name is Alexandra Reyes, and I am a Jersey City native. A little something about me, I am 22 years old, a senior, majoring in finance, and I am second-generation Puerto Rican and Dominican-American. This is my third semester here at NJCU; before coming here, I went to Hudson County Community College and got my associate’s in business (liberal arts). Some of my interests include traveling to different parts of the world, watching anime on my own or with friends, and hanging out as much as possible with my friends and family. One of the many reasons I chose this class is because, in all honesty, I was very curious and wanted to know what it was about. But also, I wanted to expand my knowledge on the issues of American society because most of the understanding of American society that I have comes from learning from others on social media and being able to take that kind of information and find the intersectionalities and the bigger picture of...
